Overview
Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main is one of the most important national-level entrance examinations in India for students seeking admission to undergraduate engineering, architecture, and planning programmes. The examination is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the Government of India.
JEE Main is primarily used for admission to National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other centrally funded technical institutions. It also serves as the qualifying examination for candidates who wish to appear for JEE Advanced for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
JEE Main Examination
The examination is conducted in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode. JEE Main primarily consists of two papers. Paper 1 is conducted for admission to undergraduate engineering and technology programmes such as B.E. and B.Tech, while Paper 2 is designed for candidates seeking admission to B.Arch and B.Planning programmes.
The examination covers subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Aptitude, Drawing, and Planning, depending on the paper selected by the candidate. The question paper is available in multiple languages, allowing candidates from different regions of India to participate.
JEE Main Sessions
JEE Main is generally conducted in multiple sessions during the year. Candidates may have the opportunity to appear in more than one session, subject to the rules applicable for the particular examination year. When multiple attempts are available, the best applicable performance is considered according to the examination authority's rules.
Who Should Appear for JEE Main?
JEE Main is primarily intended for students who want to pursue undergraduate programmes in engineering, technology, architecture, or planning at participating institutions. Candidates should carefully check the eligibility requirements, subject combinations, qualifying examination requirements, and admission rules applicable to the examination year.
Why is JEE Main Important?
JEE Main provides students with an opportunity to compete for admission to some of India's leading technical institutions. In addition to being an important entrance examination for engineering admissions, the examination also plays a significant role in determining eligibility for JEE Advanced and admission to participating institutions through the relevant counselling process.
Candidates are advised to regularly check the official JEE Main website and NTA notifications for the latest information regarding examination dates, registration, eligibility, syllabus, application procedures, admit cards, results, and counselling.

Eligibility
Candidates appearing for JEE Main should have passed their Class 12 or equivalent qualifying examination from a recognized board or institution. Students who are appearing for their Class 12 or equivalent examination in the relevant year may also be eligible to apply, subject to the eligibility conditions specified by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
For admission to B.E. and B.Tech programmes, candidates are generally required to have studied Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with one of the prescribed additional subjects such as Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, or a technical vocational subject.
There is generally no age limit for appearing in JEE Main. However, candidates must satisfy the age and year-of-passing requirements, if any, prescribed by the specific institute or counselling authority for admission.
Candidates should note that eligibility for appearing in JEE Main and eligibility for admission to a particular institute or programme can be different. NITs, IIITs, and other participating institutions may have additional requirements related to qualifying examination marks, subjects, category, and other admission criteria.
Candidates are advised to check the latest official JEE Main information bulletin and admission guidelines before applying, as eligibility requirements may change from one examination year to another.
